Samsung
Electronics has joined Nokia to become the world's largest maker of mobile
phones, according to research firm Strategy Analytics.
Nokia
ranked first in 1998 from Motorola, but in the first quarter of 2012 Samsung
shipped 93 million phones, compared with nearly 83 Nokia.
Samsung
also recorded the largest quarterly gain since 2008.
Net income
amounted to 5.05tn won ($ 4.5 billion, £ 2.8 billion) for the quarter ended
March 31 to 81 percent of 2.78tn won last year.

Samsung is
also the largest television manufacturer in the world and flat screen.
"We
hope with caution the results of the drive to continue in the future, such as
improving the competitiveness of our core business," said Robert Yi, head
of investor relations at Samsung.
The
company said its information technology (IT) and mobile communications
division, which produces smartphones, made an operating profit of 4.27tn won
in the period, as revenue in the division rose 86 percent from last year .
Samsung
will unveil the latest version of its Galaxy range of phones on May 3 Galaxy
range has been very popular and has helped Samsung running Apple to become the
largest seller of smartphones.
"The
smartphone market has been almost the only two players, Samsung and
Apple," said Sei-Cheol Lee of Meritz Securities.
"From
Galaxy3 phone unveiled in May, Samsung will continue to enjoy sales growth in
its mobile phone division."
